FOREIGN TOURISTS MAY SOON RECEIVE GST REFUNDS FOR PURCHASES MADE LOCALLY.

The government will soon launch a trial programme to reimburse the goods and services tax (GST) paid by foreign tourists who visit India, as part of an effort to implement a statutory provision.

The Integrated GST Act, which was implemented five years ago, provides for a refund on items to be carried out of the nation by a tourist who is not typically a resident of India and who is in the country for less than six months for non-immigrant reasons.

As taxes are normally not exported, a number of countries offer tourists a GST or VAT refund for purchases made outside the country; this is also the case in airport duty-free shops. In these nations, products that exceed a certain threshold are eligible for a tax refund, which may be claimed at the airport and the payment can either be paid there or transferred to the buyer’s bank account.
