Government would soon decriminalise GST violations: Revenue Secretary Tarun Bajaj

Revenue Secretary Tarun Bajaj stated that the government will soon provide guidelines for decriminalising Goods and Services Tax offences.

The government has recently released amended instructions for compounding Direct tax offences. Previously, a comparable agreement was struck for customs duty-related offences. Regarding the decriminalisation of GST violations, the Revenue Secretary stated, “We are working on it, and it will be released shortly.” We would proceed in the same manner as the customs and direct tax departments.

We are not interested in incarcerating individuals. If a firm or a person has made a mistake, we want them to pay the fine and go on, or to compound the offence and move on, if it is possible. This is of the utmost importance, and we are strengthening compliance to ensure that individuals realise they cannot escape. They wish to emerge unsullied. This is another means via which people can come clean.”
