The Income Tax Department Has Relaxed The Rules For The Faceless Appeal Scheme

The Income Tax Department has made improvements to the existing faceless appeal mechanism, making it easier for people who want a personal hearing via video conference when appealing a tax demand from the Income Tax department.

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) announced the ‘Faceless Appeal Scheme, 2021,’ which states that the Commissioner (Appeals) will allow a request for a personal hearing via video conference and will notify the appellant via the National Faceless Appeal Centre of the date and time of the hearing.

A taxpayer’s request for a personal hearing to make oral representations under the prior “Faceless Appeal Scheme, 2020” required the consent of the Chief Commissioner or the Director-General of I-T in charge of the Regional Faceless Appeal Centre. Now in a new faceless scheme, in connection with any proceedings, a person would not be permitted to appear before the Income-Tax Authority, either personally or through an authorised representative.
