The Aadhaar (Enrolment and Update) (Ninth Amendment) Regulations, 2022, were issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India in a notification. The amendment is made to Regulation 28(1), which deals with cases necessitating the deactivation of an Aadhar number will take effect on January 1, 2023, the following sub-clause has been inserted:
The Aadhaar number would be cancelled if a child who has reached the age of five or fifteen fails to update his biometric details within two years of reaching that age. The Aadhaar number will be omitted if the update is not completed within one year after deactivation.
Aadhaar number holders would be allowed to update their biometric information for free till they reach the age of 7 or 17 years, respectively. After then, the bearer of an Aadhaar number can activate it by updating his or her biometric details. The Aadhaar number holder, however, would be responsible for any relevant costs for biometric information updates as determined by the Authority from time to time.
