GST Norms for Decriminalization Offences Will Happen Shortly

Revenue Secretary Tarun Bajaj has said that the government will soon come out with norms for decriminalising offences under Goods & Services Tax (GST).

The government recently comes out with revised guidelines for compounding offences under the Direct taxes. Earlier a similar arrangement was made in case of customs duty related offences.

The government has recently released amended instructions for compounding Direct tax offences. Previously, a comparable agreement was struck for customs duty-related offences. Regarding the decriminalisation of GST violations, the Revenue Secretary stated, "We are working on it, and it will be released shortly.” We would proceed in the same manner as the customs and direct tax departments.

We are not interested in incarcerating individuals. If a firm or a person has made a mistake, we want them to pay the fine and go on, or to compound the offence and move on, if it is possible. This is of the utmost importance, and we are strengthening compliance to ensure that individuals realise they cannot escape. They wish to emerge unsullied. This is another means via which people can come clean."
